The 5 Senses
and Properties

Our first Kindergarten integration cycle engages students in working with senses and properties of objects. The focus is observation. They use each of their senses to observe the many properties of objects. Students experiment with sound using shake canisters to match the same sound. They touch and feel objects in bags to discover what each object is without using their sense of sight. They use their sense of taste to identify flavors without looking at them, and they use their sense of smell to predict food items. Finally, they use their sense of sight to observe and draw the hermit crabs! Students also spend time using properties to sort buttons and shells into groups. They use the concept of "Before" and "After" by observing green "potion" before the addition of fizzing tablets, and after. We use lab safety by wearing goggles.

Much of this unit is tied to the Writing Unit of Study called "Writing like a Scientist". Students learn to observe by looking closely; draw using realistic sizes, shapes and colors; and label their drawings by sounding out words.
